butch. is a book about butch as a style rather than an identity: a way of dressing, speaking, and moving through a room that is not granted but self-authorizing. It’s a style with a history: borrowed, handed down, stolen — or forced into shape by pressure. Moving between film stars and blues singers, memoirists and poets, and my own life as a trans masculine writer, the book asks what butch style protects, what it reveals, and why we need butch. now.
