The extremes of anti-trans violence can lead to pessimism and despair, but utopian thinking must intervene to reimagine the toxic present. This article offers a vision for a trans utopia that centers exuberant embodiment, a concept which, after trans-crip theorist Eli Clare, replaces the monocultural imperative, both human and other-than-human, with heterogeneity and plurality. Exuberant embodiment implies the release of what I call the body’s energetic capacities, which are severely limited within narrowing conditions of livability under predatory capitalism. José Esteban Muñoz’s Cruising Utopia (2009) is the catalyst for this vision.

On April 18, at the Popular Culture Association national conference In New Orleans, I received for Masculinity in Transition the John Leo & Dana Heller Award for Best Single Work, Anthology, Multi-Authored, or Edited Book In LGBTQ Studies! Thanks so much to the PCA and to the committee for this great honor.

Lecture at the University of Giessen, “Exuberant Embodiment: A Trans Utopia for an Unbearable Present,” based on an essay of the same title forthcoming in the Journal of the Society for Utopian Studies. Using Jose Muñoz’s Cruising Utopia as a guide, I present a vision for a trans utopia centered on exuberant embodiment, which connotes the abundant, overflowing quality of complete bodily autonomy for all.
