A decade of groundbreaking insights on gender in the United States are featured in my monograph, Masculinity in Transition. In this book, I look at “toxic masculinity” through a trans and queer lens to explore its historical root systems and cultural and political expressions. Masculinity is a complex gender formation that is tied to different embodiments, subjectivities, sexualities, identifications, and ideologies. Through poetry, fiction, performance, film, and streaming media, new ways of being masculine have been developed across the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, suggesting the fragility of the toxic norms currently shaping culture and politics. Capitalism-fueled, white fraternal power structures have been poisoning the planet for centuries, but they are not pre-determined nor inevitable. The book will transform and transgender critical masculinities studies and have a field-redefining impact on literary criticism, film and media studies, gender studies, trans studies, queer theory, political theory, and more.
